Webinar – Forced Organ Harvesting: What’s Happening, Complicity Risks, What to Do?

April 12th, 2024: The Canadian Forensic Nurses Association (CFNA) hosted a nurses professional development event featuring a panel of experts who discussed in-depth the issue of forced organ harvesting and the important role that nurses have to play to protect and promote human rights.

PANEL PRESENTATION:

Organ trafficking, a form of human trafficking and modern slavery, is on the rise around the world. For over two decades, the government of China has been accused of forcibly harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience, principally from practitioners of the Buddhist qigong practice of Falun Gong and Uyghur Muslims – killing the victim in the process. In June 2019 the China Tribunal, an independent people’s tribunal chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice KC, concluded that forced organ harvesting in China has been committed for years on a significant scale, that it continues today, and amounts to crimes against humanity. For Canadian medical practitioners and transplant-associated professionals, this raises serious issues of human rights and concerns for complicity in crimes against humanity. It also raises the issue of transplant tourism and how it should be addressed. Global Rights Compliance (GRC) has published the world’s first Legal Advisory and Policy Guidance that outlines the risks of complicity and the human rights due diligence requirements for transplant-related professionals and institutions who may collaborate with their counterparts in countries where organ trafficking or forced organ harvesting is known to take place. Join a panel of esteemed experts who will discuss this issue and the important role nurses have to play to protect and promote human rights.
