ETAC Input on Contemporary Forms of Slavery to Special Rapporteur during Australia Visit

Tomoya Obokata, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery including its causes and consequences, visited Australia from 14 to 27 November 2024. The purpose of the Special Rapporteur’s visit was to assess the efforts of the Australian Government to prevent and address contemporary forms of slavery in order to identify good practices and ongoing challenges.

The Australian Committee of the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC) provided input to the Special Rapporteur regarding organ trafficking in Australia as it relates to forced organ harvesting in China.

The Special Rapporteur in his report on his visit to Australia makes a number of recommendations including a federal human rights act. He states that despite many positive steps taken by the Australian Government, he witnessed some important gaps and challenges that need to be addressed sufficiently including the need to strengthen criminal law provisions and human rights due diligence among Australian businesses and their supply chains.
